What is ASU Concrete Canoe?

Every year, the Arizona State University Concrete Canoe team designs and builds a canoe made entirely out of lightweight concrete and race the final product for our student-led regional conference. Students get hands-on engineering, construction, and project management skills, which makes them more valuable to potential employers. The project consists of hull design, mix design, and construction aspects that each intertwine to create a 20-foot long canoe. Construction of the canoe consists of CNC milling Styrofoam into the shape of the canoe (as specified in hull design), sanding and preparing the mold, casting and curing the concrete, sanding the canoe and removing the mold, and finishing and sealing the canoe. Paddling practices occur at Tempe Town Lake with the use of previous canoes to prepare for the racing day competition. The project could not be possible without our dedicated team of student and alumni volunteers, industry sponsors, and university support!
